Anti-wrinkle injections using neurotoxin are the most popular injectable treatment not only at our clinic, but worldwide. As we age, lines and folds caused by repeated muscle contraction from facial expressions deepen, and eventually appear not only when we are contracting the muscles but also at rest (static lines/wrinkles). Anti-wrinkle injections can be used to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and to restore a refreshed, rejuvenated and more youthful appearance.
Anti-wrinkle injections work by blocking the message from the nerves to the muscles, resulting in less muscle contraction. There are a number of anti-wrinkle injection products available, but due to Australian Government regulations we are unable to name the products we use. However, we can say that we use a German-made product that is the highest quality and most pure neurotoxin product available.
Anti-wrinkle injections are not permanent, and patients will require a top up every 3-6 months to have continued results. The longevity of the treatment depends on the treatment area, the dose used, and the individual patient. Dr Alex will discuss your preferences with you to ensure optimal treatment dose.
Anti-wrinkle injections are very quick and generally almost pain free, and result in greatly enhanced patient confidence and satisfaction with their appearance.
Anti-wrinkle injections can be used in many areas of the face to reduce wrinkles.
The most common areas Dr Alex treats are:
In some cases, where deep folds and wrinkles occur, anti-wrinkle injections are used in conjunction with dermal fillers to give an optimal result.
Anti-wrinkle injections can also be used for gummy-smile correction. Gummy smile is a very common condition whereby when a patient smiles, a large portion of the gum above the upper teeth is visible. Anti-wrinkle injections can be used to relax the muscle above the upper lip, resulting in the upper lip coming down and reducing the appearance of the gums when the patient smiles.
Dr Alex will discuss your aesthetic goals with you to determine a personalised treatment plan.
The treatment area will be cleaned using alcohol and chlorhexidine. Depending on the treatment area, numbing cream may be applied. Nitrous oxide gas (happy gas) is available to our patients to make them as comfortable as possible, but this is normally not needed for anti-wrinkle injections. Dr Alex will inject the anti-wrinkle injections using a very fine needle. Gauze will be applied with pressure. Generally between 2 and 7 injection sites will be used, depending on the treatment area.
Dr Alex will continue to check-in with you during the procedure to ensure you are as comfortable as possible. Most patients report little or no discomfort or pain during the anti-wrinkle injections procedure.
We always provide pain relief to our patients. We use a combination numbing cream, local anaesthetic injections, and happy gas. The pain relief used depends on the treatment, the area being treated, and the patients’ individual needs and preferences. Your comfort will always be prioritised by Dr Alex. Most patients experience no or very little pain during the anti-wrinkle injections procedure. Anti-wrinkle injections are considered much less painful than other injectable treatments, such as dermal fillers.
We advise our patients to avoid wearing makeup for 4 hours after treatment, avoid strenuous exercise on the day of treatment, do not massage or rub your face for 4 hours after treatment, and stay away from saunas, spas, and hot yoga for 48-hours post treatment.
In some cases bruising may occur around the treatment area, that can last up to one week. We provide our patients with a topical cream that is very effective in reducing bruising.
Anti-wrinkle injections do not take effect immediately and it generally takes about 2 weeks to see the full effect. Dr Alex will ask you to come back for a review around this time to ensure you are happy with the results and provide top-ups if needed.
