Dermal fillers are made of a gel-like fluid called hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance found in the skin. Dermal fillers are injected below the surface of the skin and can be used virtually anywhere in the face or body to increase volume, reduce wrinkles, lift sagging skin, and to contour and re-shape the face.
The most common areas we use dermal filler include lips, cheeks, jawline, chin, and tear troughs.
Dermal fillers are non-permanent, and they will dissolve naturally over time. Depending on the type of dermal filler used and the location of injection, the filler will last 6-18 months before requiring a top-up.
Dr Alex will select the appropriate filler to use based on the area of treatment and your individual needs. There are a wide range of products available, but we use only the highest quality Swiss and German-made dermal fillers. Due to Australian Government regulations, we are unable to state the names of individual dermal filler manufacturers online.
The amount of dermal filler to be injected will be decided based on the treatment area, and the individual patients’ needs and preferences. In some cases, multiple treatments will be required to achieve the desired look.
Lip filler is one of the most common procedures performed by Dr Alex. Filler in the lips can be used to increase the size of lips, change the shape of the lips, change the proportions of the lips, define the lip border, and hydrate the lips.
Cheek filler is a very popular treatment that can be used to increase the size or projection of the cheeks, alter the proportions of the face, reducing sagging and lifting the lower face.
During ageing the cheek area is one of the first areas to lose volume. Cheek filler can be used to increase the size of the cheeks where volume loss has occurred, and to change the shape of the cheeks, and provide a contoured look. Asymmetry of the cheeks is very common and this can be easily corrected using dermal filler, which often results in a significant improvement in appearance.
Many patients have a recessed chin which can be greatly improved using dermal filler. A well-projected chin creates facial harmony and increases beauty. Increasing the size, shape, and projection of the chin is very easy to do using dermal filler. Many patients are unhappy with the shape of their chin, thinking it is either too round or too angular and this can be easily improved using dermal filler. Often when the jawline is treated using dermal filler, some filler will be placed in the chin also, to create balance and harmony.
Volume loss in the temples is very common, especially in patients who are very lean. Volume loss in the temples begins in the mid-to-late 20s, and is often very apparent by the age of 40-50. This creates a hollow look in the upper face. Volume loss in the temples is very easy to treat using dermal filler.
Many patients are not aware they have volume loss in the temple region, and treatment of this area can greatly improve the overall appearance of the face and create a more youthful look.
Temple filler can also be used to lift the brow and/or create a fuller brow area.
The tear troughs are depressions starting from the inner-eye and run downwards and outwards across the cheek. Tear troughs are normal, and are often apparent from a young age. Many patients are concerned about their tear troughs, as in some patients they are deeper and more obvious than in others. In addition, tear troughs become more apparent with age.
Tear troughs can be treated with dermal filler, but are a more complex area to treat than other areas of the face, and require careful selection of the appropriate dermal filler, and a skilful injector. We use a dermal filler that is specially made for treating tear troughs. When filler is used appropriately in the tear trough area, the results can be transformative for the patient.
Jawline filler has become increasingly popular in recent years, and for good reason! A strong, refined jawline can be transformative for both men and women – just imagine Angelina Jolie with a weaker jawline!
Filler in the jawline can be used to change the shape of the jawline, create a sharper and more defined jawline, to make the face appear slimmer and more defined, and in men can be used to create a more masculine face.
Some patients have a weaker jawline than others, and by using dermal filler, the appearance of the jawline can be greatly improved.
Often, jawline filler is used in conjunction with fat dissolving injections for the area under the chin, or in conjunction with masseter slimming injections, to create a slimmer and more defined jawline.
As women age, the jawline becomes less defined, and this can be treated using dermal filler to restore the jawline to a more youthful appearance.
Dermal fillers can also be used to treat folds and wrinkles in many areas of the face, including the cheek area such as accordion lines and the nasolabial folds, marionette lines in the chin area, and smokers lines around the mouth.
The ‘liquid facelift’ is a very popular treatment. As we age, we lose volume from all areas of the face, resulting in folds, wrinkles, sagging, and a hollowed look. Although surgical facelifts are a popular treatment choice for many patients, some patients would rather opt for a non-surgical treatment. Fortunately, lost volume can be easily replaced using dermal filler.
Dr Alex will assess the face using his pan-facial assessment approach to determine the areas that require treatment. Typically a number of areas on the face will be treated during the liquid facelift treatment. The result is a rejuvenated, refreshed and more youthful appearance.
Dermal fillers are not just for women – there are many male patients who seek an improvement in their appearance using dermal fillers. Often, male patients are looking for more masculine features – most often including a stronger and more defined jawline and chin. Jawline and chin filler are some of our most popular treatments for male patients, and can greatly enhance the confidence of the patient. Other male patients have experienced age-associated volume loss and want a more refreshed, youthful appearance. In these cases, dermal fillers can be used to replace lost volume and restore the face to its former glory!
Scar correction treatments are growing in popularity. There are many different types of scars, therefore Dr Alex will need to assess your scar for suitability treatment. Scars that result from a depression in the skin, such as acne scars, surgical scars and scars resulting from mole removal can often be treated using dermal fillers. Where there is a depression of the skin, filler can be injected underneath the skin to lift the skin and flatten the scar. In the case of acne scars, dermal fillers give a dramatic improvement very quickly, compared to other types of treatment for acne scars.
Dr Alex will discuss your aesthetic goals with you to determine a personalised treatment plan.
The treatment area will be cleaned using alcohol and chlorhexidine. Depending on the treatment area, numbing cream may be applied. In some cases, local anaesthetic injections will be used. Happy gas is available to our patients to make them as comfortable as possible.
Dr Alex will inject the dermal filler using a very fine needle. Gauze will be applied with pressure to reduce bruising. In some cases, Dr Alex will use a cannula (blunt needle) to inject the dermal filler. In this case, a needle is first used to create a tiny hole in the skin where the cannula is inserted, resulting in only a single entry point per area.
Dr Alex will continue to check-in with you during the procedure to ensure you are as comfortable as possible. Most patients report minimal discomfort during dermal filler treatment, and the procedure is very quick, taking only minutes.
We always provide pain relief to our patients. We use a combination of numbing cream, local anaesthetic injections, and nitrous oxide gas (happy gas). The pain relief used depends on the treatment, the area being treated, and the patients’ individual needs and preferences. Your comfort will always be prioritised by Dr Alex. Many patients report either no pain or minimal pain during dermal filler treatments.
We advise our patients to avoid wearing makeup on the day of treatment, avoid rubbing or massaging the treatment area, avoid strenuous exercise on the day of treatment, and stay away from saunas, spas, and hot yoga for 48-hours post treatment.
Some swelling may occur around the treatment area, and this will subside usually within 24 hours.
In some cases bruising may occur around the treatment area, that can last up to one week. We provide our patients with a topical cream that is very effective in reducing bruising.
In the event of any complications or concerns after the procedure, even after hours, Dr Alex will be available to discuss your concerns and provide advice, and offers a complimentary review if needed.
