Fat-dissolving injections are used specifically for the fat under the chin, often referred to as ‘double-chin injections’. Many patients are unhappy with the amount of fat they have in this area, which is known as submental fat. Fat dissolving injections can be used to permanently get rid of this fat. The injections contain an acid that is also naturally found in the body. Due to Australian regulations we are unable to name the acid or the product used on the internet.
The procedure involves a number of injections into the target area, which break down the fat cells. The fat cells are ‘liquified’ and the body then absorbs them. Fat-dissolving injections are a popular procedure for getting rid of fat under the chin, as it is a non-invasive procedure, compared to surgical alternatives such as liposuction. The satisfaction rate after fat-dissolving injections is very high, and they can significantly improve patients’ self confidence.
It is important for patients receiving fat-dissolving treatment to be aware that as part of the body’s process for getting rid of the fat, there will be localised swelling in the treatment area, which will gradually decrease over a period of about 4 weeks after treatment. Bruising of the treatment area is also very common. Therefore it is not recommended to receive fat-dissolving injections within 4 weeks of a special event.
It is also important to be aware that the majority of patients will require multiple treatments to achieve their desired effect. Most commonly patients receive between 2 and 4 treatments, spaced a minimum of 1 month apart.
The treatment area will be cleaned using alcohol and chlorhexidine. A temporary grid will be applied to the treatment area to map out the injection sites. Happy gas is available to our patients to make them as comfortable as possible. The fat dissolving drug is mixed with local anaesthetic prior to injection to reduce discomfort. The fat dissolving injections are then injected into several injection sites in the treatment area. Ice will be applied immediately afterwards to reduce discomfort.
Dr Alex will continue to check-in with you during the procedure to ensure you are as comfortable as possible. Most patients find there is some discomfort and pain during the fat dissolving injections procedure.
We always provide pain relief to our patients. We use a combination of numbing cream, local anaesthetic injections, and nitrous oxide gas (happy gas). The pain relief used depends on the treatment, the area being treated, and the patients’ individual needs and preferences. Your comfort will always be prioritised by Dr Alex. Most patients find there is some discomfort and pain during the fat dissolving injections procedure. Some patients find they still have some pain after the procedure, and Dr Alex advises taking panadol in this case, if needed.
We advise our patients to avoid wearing makeup on the day of treatment, avoid rubbing or massaging the treatment area for 72 hours, avoid strenuous exercise on the day of treatment, and stay away from saunas, spas, and hot yoga for 48-hours post treatment.
Swelling of the treatment area is expected after fat-dissolving injections. The area will be very swollen for the first day of treatment, and will gradually become less swollen over a period of 4 weeks. After this time, the effect of the treatment will start to become visible.
Bruising around the treatment area is also common after fat-dissolving injections, and can last up to one-week. We provide our patients with a topical cream that is very effective in reducing bruising.
Dr Alex will see you for a review 8 weeks after the procedure, to assess the results and perform a second treatment if necessary.
In the event of any complications or concerns after the procedure, even after hours, Dr Alex will be available to discuss your concerns and provide advice, and offers a complimentary review if needed.
