Platelet-rich plasma (PRP), also known as the Vampire facial (popularised by Kim Kardashian-West), is a procedure that uses your body’s own cells for rejuvenation and to delay ageing.
PRP promotes healing, regeneration and collagen formation, to give the skin a rejuvenated, youthful appearance. PRP is most commonly used in the undereye area, to treat fine lines, wrinkles and improve skin texture. Some patients also report improvement in dark circles after PRP treatment. PRP is also used as a whole-face treatment, to rejuvenate the face, reduce wrinkles, and improve skin texture. When PRP is used regularly over the long term, it is able to slow down and delay the ageing process, often even reversing the visible signs of ageing. The results can be very impressive, especially when combined with other anti-ageing treatments. For this reason, PRP is one of Dr Alex’s favourite treatments to perform.
The beauty of PRP is that no foreign substances are used – we are simply using your own body’s rich source of anti-ageing nutrients. This makes PRP a natural alternative to other anti-ageing treatments such as anti-wrinkle injections and dermal filler, and is therefore preferred by some of our patients. Because your own plasma is used, the procedure is considered safer than when dermal fillers are used.
PRP can be used on any area that requires rejuvenation. PRP is commonly used in the under-eye area, face, neck, décolletage, hands, for scar treatment, and on the scalp for hair loss.
A small amount of your blood is taken from your arm by Dr Alex, like when getting a blood test. The blood is placed into a machine called a centrifuge that separates the different components, including red blood cells, white blood cells, and plasma (the clear fluid component). The plasma contains many growth factors that promote healing and regeneration.
The treatment area will be cleaned using alcohol and chlorhexidine. Numbing cream may be applied. Happy gas is available to our patients to make them as comfortable as possible.
Once the plasma is separated from the other blood components, Dr Alex will draw it up into a syringe and inject it into the treatment area, using a very fine needle.
Dr Alex will continue to check-in with you during the procedure to ensure you are as comfortable as possible.
We always provide pain relief to our patients. We use a combination numbing cream, local anaesthetic injections, and nitrous oxide gas (happy gas). The pain relief used depends on the treatment, the area being treated, and the patients’ individual needs and preferences. Your comfort will always be prioritised by Dr Alex. Most patients experience a small amount of discomfort during PRP.
After the procedure, the treated area will be somewhat swollen. When the eye area is treated, the area will appear quite swollen for a couple of days. This is completely normal, and occurs because of the fluid being placed under the skin, not because of any kind of reaction, and will gradually come down as the fluid is absorbed. This is an essential part of the rejuvenation process that is occurring after the treatment.
We advise our patients to avoid wearing makeup for 4 hours after treatment, avoid strenuous exercise on the day of treatment, do not massage or rub the treatment area for 4 hours after treatment, and stay away from saunas, spas, and hot yoga for 48-hours post treatment.
In some cases bruising may occur around the treatment area, that can last up to one week. We provide our patients with a topical cream that is very effective in reducing bruising.
In the event of any complications or concerns after the procedure, even after hours, Dr Alex will be available to discuss your concerns and provide advice, and offers a complimentary review if needed.
